My Life, Beyond Parkinson’s
At 47, an Early-Onset Parkinson’s diagnosis brought uncertainty. But I chose not to let it define me. Instead, I embraced a proactive approach to living well.
My journey involves:
- Daily Exercise: PIYO Yoga, BARRE, and Spinning keep me active and strong.
- Mindful Nutrition: Fueling my body for optimal well-being.
- Positive Mindset: Navigating challenges with resilience and optimism.
- Strong Community: Finding invaluable support through programs like Momentum and P.U.N.C.H.
These programs, designed for neurological conditions, have significantly improved my balance, strength, and flexibility. Most importantly, they’ve connected me with a community that understands.
My experience proves that a fulfilling life with Parkinson’s is possible. With the right approach and support, we can all thrive.
My Life with Parkinson’s – Hobbies
My Passion, My Therapy: Fly Fishing and Guitar with Parkinson’s
Life with Parkinson’s presents challenges, but I’ve found that my lifelong passions, fly fishing and guitar, are not just hobbies—they’re essential tools for maintaining my fine motor skills and overall well-being.
Fly Fishing: Joy in the Flow

The intricate art of fly tying, with its delicate manipulation of materials, keeps my fingers nimble. My overflowing fly boxes, filled with meticulously crafted dry flies, nymphs, and streamers, are a testament to this practice. Sharing this passion by tying flies for friends and family brings me immense joy.
From the serene streams of central Pennsylvania—the Yellow Breeches, Lycoming, Loyalsock, Penns Creek, and Codorus—to the legendary waters of the Delaware River, I’ve found solace and challenge.
My 2023 trip to Montana, fulfilling a dream to fish the Gallatin, Madison, Missouri, and DePuy (Armstrong Spring Creek), was a profound experience. The thrill of catching a wild trout on a fly I tied myself is a powerful reminder that Parkinson’s doesn’t define my limits.
Guitar: Harmony and Resilience

Starting guitar at 54 was a new challenge, and it’s taught me invaluable lessons in patience, persistence, and perseverance—the “3 P’s” that resonate deeply in my Parkinson’s journey.
Studies confirm the benefits of musical instruments on motor skills and cognition, making this more than just a hobby.
The joy of creating music, despite the challenges, is incredibly rewarding. My family might have mixed reviews on my renditions, but I continue to learn and grow, supplementing my practice with online resources.
Never Give Up
Life is too short to abandon your dreams. Embrace opportunities, pursue your passions, and find your own unique ways to thrive.
Life with Parkinson’s – My Family
My life is enriched by the love and support of my wonderful family. I’ve been married to my wife, Mary, for 38 years, and together we’ve raised two amazing children.
Our daughter, Emily, recently moved to Philadelphia after living in Poland. We cherish the visits and the opportunity to reconnect. Our son, Derek, and his wife, Molly, and our granddaughter Bonnie reside in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia, and we enjoy staying in touch and sharing special moments together.
Adding to the lively atmosphere of our home are two energetic rescue Boxer dogs, Duke and Katie. They bring boundless joy and companionship to our lives.
I’m fortunate to have such a loving and supportive family by my side as I navigate life with Parkinson’s. Their unwavering love and encouragement are a constant source of strength and inspiration.
